Introduction to the movie 'Novocaine' (2025)
Novocaine is a captivating romantic start that hints at a compelling story about a passionate man trying to communicate with his lover. Then she makes the first move toward him, sparking a relationship. Suddenly, she is kidnapped while they are working. This results in a mix of comedy and intense action as the story shifts. Around the middle of the movie, there's a surprising twist that defies expectations, as the hero continues to chase his lover’s kidnappers with impressive action scenes and clever choices.
Novocaine defeats two thieves who kidnapped his girlfriend, finds out where the third kidnapper is, and heads there, only to discover a shocking truth that confused us as viewers: his girlfriend works with the gang of thieves, and the third kidnapper is her brother.
When the third kidnapper tries to kill Novocaine after a fight with him, his girlfriend steps in to save him. The police arrive as well. The kidnapper escapes in an ambulance, dropping Novocaine, which causes serious injuries. When Novocaine realizes what's happening, he fights back against the third kidnapper, and a brief struggle follows. Meanwhile, his girlfriend chases him in a police car with his online friend and a policewoman who was injured by the kidnapper. Luckily, she arrives just in time and rescues Novocaine. She then gets into a fight with her brother, who nearly kills her if it weren't for Novocaine's intervention, which saves her.
The movie ends, highlighting the happy moments between Novocaine and his lover Sherry, who is imprisoned for her ties to the gang, but Novocaine will never leave her.
Movie hiccups
The director was too impulsive in adding action scenes to the movie because Sherry was still learning her way through her first encounter with Novocaine, and her goal was to memorize the bank vault numbers. Her relationship with Novocaine hadn't developed enough for him to tell her this, but he decided to move quickly to the robbery.
Also, the movie should have delayed the surprise a bit, but he was too quick to reveal the truth about Sherry's involvement with the gang.
Additionally, the appearance of Novocaine's online friend, whom he had used when trapped in one of the traps, at the home of a gang member he had killed in a restaurant after chasing him, was very sudden. The police then arrived. The police should have arrived first since they were definitely quicker to identify the person killed in the restaurant.
Also, isn't it a bit odd that his friend's initial plan was to stay out of it, but then they decided to step in to help and get involved with him, considering their online friendship?
Novocaine's unique condition after feeling pain doesn't prevent him from losing consciousness. Despite taking numerous hits, being injured in multiple areas, and bleeding heavily, he remained remarkably resilient.
Sherry's decision to leave her brother for her supposed lover, Novocaine, seems understandable; however, her shooting and multiple attempts to kill her brother only raise a suspicious question: Is she doing this out of love, or is it because she has recently uncovered the truth? I believe the answer is neither. A brother is a valued person, no matter how bad he may be, and no one would dare commit such an act against him.
Advantages of the film
Novocaine's decisions demonstrate intelligence and quick wit, even in tough situations that could confuse any living creature, and he sees no choice but to surrender.
His determination to personally reclaim his beloved Sherry is admirable and captivating, stirring emotions in the audience despite the seriousness of the situation and his inability to help, aside from his unique trait of not feeling pain.
His conversation with the police officer about how difficult it is to find the right person to love, his long-awaited love, and his willingness to fight to save his beloved himself, not waiting for or relying on others, was the height of romance, in my humble opinion.
My expectations about his friend, whom he asked to help him, were odd. I thought he would be physically strong, like a giant, or experienced in street fighting, but when he first appeared, I laughed. Still, it was a reasonable choice so as not to steal the spotlight from the hero.
Some of the comedic moments in the movie are really funny and well done, making me wish the film leaned more toward that genre, with distinctive action scenes like Jackie Chan movies, for example.
Thoughts on the movie
It's a good movie, filled with excitement at many points, and the acting is fairly decent. However, it's hindered by its rushed introduction of action and suspense to quickly satisfy and attract viewers. It should have been more patient and thoughtful in revealing key moments and supporting Sherry's position in a way that avoids contradiction but remains satisfying as an action film with some genuine emotion.
The hero's smart decisions also stand out in Novocaine, and his determination to keep going for his loved one is both touching and deeply romantic.
It's not a dazzling or profound film, but it's a satisfying watch.
