Monster's Inc. idea
I want to say that the idea of Monsters, Inc. is unbelievable, original, and entirely unique. What mind came up with this concept in the world of animation?
It is the writer Pete Docter who also gave us the movie Up 2009 and Wall E 2008, two heavyweight films that will never be forgotten.
Others participated with him in writing Monsters, Inc., but I am confident that he was the first to contribute significantly. I must thank him for his creativity, and we expect a lot from him in the future.
The idea of Monsters, Inc. is that its monsters are responsible for generating energy for the city through children's screams, and that the city's residents are monsters, with the talented ones among them tasked with terrifying children to obtain their screams. However, they see children as an unusual threat to them—if a child enters their world or if one of the things they use is exposed to a child—and this leads to the very interesting events of the film, when a little girl enters this world and causes chaos.
Monsters Inc. has wonderful characters.
The main character in the movie is Sullivan, who is one of the best monsters in the city. He does his job perfectly and with precision, tending to be more serious in his actions. We see him committed to his work and excelling at it. There is also his assistant, Mike, who is characterized by a great combination of seriousness and humor and has a strong ambition to break horror records within their company.
There is also Randall, who is one of the monsters in the company, but he is not as capable as Sullivan and is characterized by great arrogance and jealousy. Additionally, there is Waternoose, the company manager, who is marked by constant concern for his company and the goal of bringing energy to their world.
There is also Celia, Mike's nervous girlfriend who works with them at the company, and Rose, who is responsible for the reports submitted by the monsters about their work. She has a strict character when it comes to her duties.
We come to know Boo, the child from another world. She is marked by extreme innocence, a deep love of play, her rapid rush toward strangers and quick attachment to them, her pure joy, and her gentle childish laughter. Just as you loved Setsuko in the movie Grave of the Fireflies, you will love Boo with the same intensity, maybe even more.
Important events in Monsters, Inc.
The events of Monsters, Inc. begin when monsters scare children, and Sullivan is especially skilled at it, which leads Randall, his fierce competitor, to try cheating. Sullivan stumbles upon this by chance and finds a door after work at Randall's place. He opens it but finds no one inside. Suddenly, he hears a voice behind him, turns around, and sees a little girl trying to play with him. He panics and tries to push her away, but she is determined to play.
He runs to escape, but she follows him. Eventually, he decides to put her in a small bag and quickly leaves the company with her. He goes to his friend and assistant, Mike, at the restaurant, where Mike is dating his girlfriend, Celia, and tells him what happened. They are surprised when the girl comes out of the bag, causing chaos at the restaurant because everyone sees her. The situation becomes very chaotic, so Sullivan and Mike grab the girl and hurriedly leave before the child control officers arrive, heading home.
At home, we see an unusual comedy, with their extreme panic from the child, who fears that she might prey on them or just touch them. They try to get away from her as much as possible. When she clings to one of Mike's toys and he forcibly takes it from her, she screams and cries loudly, causing the electricity to fluctuate severely. When they try to silence her, Mike makes a funny move, making her laugh hysterically, which causes the lights to turn on quickly and brightly in their building. Then, suddenly, the electricity goes out, leaving Sullivan and Mike wondering what happened.
Boo kept playing until sleep started to overtake her, so Sullivan took her to the bedroom. She climbed onto the bed, and Sullivan nearly left, but she showed him a drawing she had made of Randall, pointing to the closed closet door. Sullivan opened it to show her there was nothing inside, but she was still scared, so he closed the door and sat in front of it. She was reassured and fell asleep immediately.
When Sullivan looked at Boo sleeping, he had a feeling that she was harmless. When he shared this feeling with Mike, Mike mocked him and asked him to think of a way to get rid of her. Sullivan then considered taking her back to her home, but Mike was very scared of that because it would mean they would have to go into the company with her and search for her door until they found her and returned her home. That was a crazy and very risky idea.
Indeed, the next day, they made a costume to hide the little girl Boo inside and went to the company. They were surprised by the child control forces inside, who were investigating what happened because of the bag bearing the company logo that they left behind in the restaurant.
Mike tried to find the door from Mrs. Roz, the work reports specialist, but failed. He then hid it from Sullivan when he returned, and they later discovered that Randall was also looking for the child—but for a different mysterious reason than returning her home. So, they went to work with her, and Mike took the code for another door, trying to convince Sullivan it was her door.
He refused to go in, and while they argued about it, Boo disappeared. They started searching for her. During the search, Mike stopped and told Sullivan that her disappearance was for their own good and that she was no longer their concern. However, Sullivan went outside the place, ignoring what his friend Mike said, and bumped into Randall, who began asking for their opinion about the child. Mike distracted him while Sullivan went to look for Boo.
Randall soon uncovered Mike's deception and chased him inside the company. He stopped him and asked about the child's whereabouts. Mike accused him of causing this by trying to cheat on their work results. Randall threatened that he must have the child at a certain time, indicating her door, and that everyone would be outside for a break.
While Sullivan was chasing the girl who reached the waste disposal area, he imagined that he saw her crushed by the waste and lost consciousness more than once while thinking this. However, she escaped from the waste bin to join other little monsters playing nearby. Meanwhile, he carried a cube of waste he believed was hers. Sullivan was surprised when Mike ran toward him, so he raised his hand with the cube while crying and trembling violently.
As they stood there, they saw her running with the little monsters. Sullivan ran to her and hugged her tightly. They then went to the hall of doors. Sullivan asked Mike if he had found Boo's door, and Mike said there was no time to explain until they arrived. Sullivan actually saw her door in front of him, but he was doubtful when he heard what Randall told Mike and refused to let Boo enter her house. Mike shouted at him and entered her room to prove he was wrong about his suspicions. But Randall put him in a box and closed it while Sullivan and Boo hid.
It was Sullivan's feelings toward Boo that motivated him, and he truly became attached to her and loved her. When he saw her innocence and realized she couldn't possibly harm anyone, he finally understood that she was just a little girl who only cared about playing with the others.
Randall left the horror hall believing that the little girl was responsible for kidnapping him. Sullivan and Boo chased after him for Mike, but they reached an empty, sealed area on all sides. They couldn't find any trace of Randall, so they kept searching until Boo accidentally discovered a hidden key.
This key opened a wall that hid a long corridor. They quickly went through it and found Randall preparing an experiment to extract children's screams with a new device. When he opened the box, he didn't find the child but instead found Mike. He decided to perform the experiment on Mike, which prompted Sullivan to disconnect the device's power. Sullivan freed Mike and escaped while Randall looked for the reason why the device had stopped working.
Sullivan and Mike, with Boo, nearly left the company to escape. However, Sullivan chose to inform Mr. Waternoose about Randall's plans. They went to him in the training hall and tried to tell him what they had discovered. Waternoose ordered them to scare the child in the simulation so the new trainees could see what he was doing. They did that, and Boo saw him, which scared her very much. When he tried to calm her down and explain what was happening, she escaped and fell to the ground, exposing her face.
Waternoose was very upset, but Mike stopped him and explained that she was peaceful and harmless. He then explained Randall's plans to him, making sure no one else found out. Afterwards, they went to the horror hall to send Boo home. However, another door opened beside her door, and they told him it wasn’t her door. He then claimed that it was their door. Suddenly, Randall appeared, opened the door, pushed them and Waternoose inside, and then closed it immediately.
Sullivan and Mike found themselves in the middle of the snow, and Sullivan tried to lock and open the door more than once, but Mike told him that they had been banished like other monsters who had made mistakes or rebelled. He nervously blamed him and then attacked him, causing them to fall together and roll several meters down a snowy slope, only to find themselves in front of a giant person welcoming them.
The giant was one of the monsters banished to the land of snow, where he led them to a cave in the middle of the snow where he lived. Mike was very angry, blaming Sullivan for what happened, but Sullivan was thinking about Boo's fate, as he knew she was now in great danger. His heart was deeply attached to her because he had touched her childish innocence and kindness, which helped create a special bond between them.
When he discovered a nearby village with children, he decided to use skiing to find a way to return to her. Although Mike was very upset with him for only thinking of the child and not their work and dreams, Sullivan saw only her. This caused Mike to end their friendship at that moment. Sullivan had not been emotionally attached to the child like Sullivan, and while that saddened Sullivan greatly, he had a higher goal: to save the innocent child Boo.
Sullivan headed out into the cold toward the village alone, without his friend. While he was skating, he fell because of a rock in the middle of the ice. When he got up, he saw the village just a few meters ahead and heard the screams of children inside. He immediately headed toward the village. At that same moment, as one of the monsters was entering through the door of a child in the village, Sullivan pushed him hard and then entered Monsters, Inc.
Sullivan runs to the place where Randall is holding Boo, storms in forcefully, then grabs the device that Randall almost used on Boo. He smashes it and throws it toward Waternoose and Randall. Sullivan then frees Boo, carries her, and runs outside with her. However, Randall follows him in disguise like a chameleon, leading to a violent quarrel. During the fight, Sullivan can't resist because of Randall's disguise. At that moment, Mike arrives, blames Sullivan for leaving him, and throws a snowball that accidentally hits Randall. Sullivan responds by hitting Mike. Suddenly, they all flee to the Hall of Horrors, where Sullivan plans to send Boo back home.
Randall catches up with them there before Sullivan manages to send Boo to her house. He then decides to escape again with Boo and Mike. They climb up just as the doors are pulled out of the hall, and they are dragged with them. Randall chases them relentlessly, leading to an intense and exciting chase as they move between the doors and what they lead to. Randall manages to kidnap the child Boo from Sullivan's arms, but she is able to recover her and gain control over Randall because Boo has abandoned her fear of him, driven by her concern for Sullivan and her attachment to him. They then throw Randall through one of the doors and shatter the door into pieces.
They then headed to Boo's door to take her home, but they were surprised when the door moved back to the horror hall. They saw Waternoose and the anti-child forces waiting for them to come down with the door. So, they played a simple trick: Mike lured them away from the hall, allowing Sullivan to escape with Boo through her door. However, Waternoose noticed them and chased them until they reached the training hall, which he stormed after Sullivan successfully powered the door. Sullivan then returned Boo to her home and bed.
Later, he tried to find the girl after hitting Sullivan, only to discover she was no longer in her bed. The entire place lit up immediately, revealing Mike behind the glass with the anti-child forces. They saw and heard his plan publicly, and he was arrested on the spot. Before leaving, he shouted at Sullivan that he was the reason for the company's loss and predicted the upcoming power shortage in the city.
After Waternoose was arrested, the child protection forces introduced their boss to Sullivan and Mike, and they were surprised to see Roz, who was responsible for the reports in the company, standing in front of them. She was the head of these forces, and she explained that they had suspected for two years what was happening inside the company. Of course, she asked Sullivan to say goodbye to the child and informed him that her door would be removed after she returned home. This brought tears to Sullivan's eyes, so he carried Boo to her room and said farewell, which prompted her to hug him, and she felt she would never see him again. It was a very touching scene that conveyed deep emotions from both of them.
The door was then destroyed, leaving only one piece, which Mike gave to Sullivan as a keepsake. Then everyone left the company, and Mike thought that his friend Sullivan looked very sad, so he tried to cheer him up by recalling their fun adventure filled with laughter. This comment made Sullivan realize that Boo's laughter had previously caused a large wave of energy. The scene then shifted to a child's room, where one of the monsters was present. When the child woke up, he found Mike in front of him, trying to make him laugh. The scene changed again, showing the horror hall transformed into a small amusement park designed to extract children's laughter. Sullivan was overseeing all of this, but he didn't seem happy about it.
Mike saw his friend's misery and wanted to surprise him, so he guided him with his eyes closed to the spot where Boo's door was broken. When Sullivan opened his eyes, he saw the door in front of him, mostly glued together from the broken pieces. He was very surprised, especially when Mike told him that one piece was missing. Fortunately, that piece was the souvenir Mike had given him earlier, so he placed it in its spot, turned the door handle, and eagerly looked for her, hoping to hear her voice calling him as she did before. A beautiful smile appeared on his face, filled with love and happiness.
My comment and summary of the movie
- Although it is an animated movie, and it talks about monsters, you feel that they are very real people, they go to work and live their lives simply and have goals, and this is really amazing, in addition to the fact that despite being monsters whose mission is to scare children, feelings of fear sometimes overwhelm them for one reason or another, and this confirms to us that all creatures have almost the same psychology of feelings.
- Feelings of love here are generated through coexistence with others, we may have a certain negative idea about a person or thing, but this idea may change immediately with living with this person or thing, and experiencing life with him, and this is what happened with Sullivan and Boo.
- Friendship is a real treasure that cannot be lived without in life, and love is the most beautiful relationship between all creatures, and compassion is one of the best feelings that attract others to you.
- We must take a look at the goals we seek in life, to make sure that they are the desired ones, and the way to reach them cannot be at the expense of others.
- Children's innocence and their love for us or our love for them are the purest feelings in life. They are pure and their mentality and feelings have not yet been polluted.
- The strong, deep and beautiful bond that developed in our wonderful movie Monsters, Inc., between the monster Sullivan and the little girl Boo, makes you wonder how this happened? The answer is simply that this is related to the nature of the two characters, as the little girl is characterized by kindness and peace, and he also has the same qualities, despite being a monster who scares children, he touched these two qualities in her, so his feelings moved to go in the same direction, which is what the movie presented to us with charm and magnificence.
- The comedic side of the movie came from Mike's character in an amazing way, as his reactions force you to let go of your laughter, and Boo also snatched our laughter, but because of her unique innocence.
- Finally, it is a movie for all ages, in my opinion, and it adds great happiness to your day when you see it, and it may make you search for a bond in this unique way, if you do not have one, with any person or being that gives you feelings like the ones we saw.
