John Doe undoubtedly had a vision and a theory behind his actions. He believed the execution had to shock everyone so that his powerful message would be remembered forever. And indeed, it was intensely shocking.
There is no doubt that Kevin Spacey's performance as John Doe was dazzling and captivating, despite appearing only in the second half of the film. His portrayal speaks volumes about the character's depth and the brilliance of his performance.
Imagine a character embodying multiple traits, all of which are palpable in his features. For example, his absolute confidence in his words and actions, his unwavering belief in his purpose, his grandeur as the instrument of divine retribution against wrongdoers, the genius and logic that permeate his pronouncements, and his audacity and disregard for anything but the desired outcome of his actions.
The sheer madness of believing himself to be God's instrument in delivering justice to sinners was somewhat perplexing to me. I couldn't fathom how he reached that point, but it's a logical consequence we can observe in this world, rife with all sorts of madness and the reasons that can easily lead to it.
Sometimes, excessive knowledge, which nourishes the mind, can be a negative factor. Some minds can become confused and lost amid an abundance of knowledge or set illusory goals. John Doe was an avid reader, and this may have contributed to the conclusions he reached.
Addressing sins and holding their perpetrators accountable were inevitable; every person with a clear conscience would wish to do so. However, we, as humans, cannot become instruments of judging and punishing others. Therefore, John Doe was afflicted with delusions of grandeur in his actions, and he went too far.
Detectives Somerst and Mills
They were completely different, so there was no real trust between them, each with his own way of doing things. While Somerset was calm, composed, and balanced, Mills was violent and impulsive to the point of recklessness. Yes, he was reckless around criminals, but that was a serious weakness a clever criminal could exploit, and John Doe did just that, leading to unbearable, profound suffering.
Somerset, too, was eager for knowledge and extremely intelligent. He knew only iron could break iron, so he recognized the Seven Deadly Sins theory early on. He tried to prevent the criminal from completing his work, but he hadn't truly anticipated such an ending, one that left him emotionally wounded and defeated, his mind in turmoil as he searched for answers to many perplexing questions.
They were indeed chasing a madman, but they did not appreciate him as he deserved, which always made him superior to them. Even when he offered himself to them to be arrested, he was in control of the situation, not the other way around.

The ending was simply the completion of John Doe's unfinished business, but it also marked the end of Somerset and Mills' careers as detectives. Somerset completely broke down at the sight of John's incredibly cruel criminal schemes, while Mills abandoned his role as a police officer and killed John in revenge for the brutal murder of his wife and unborn child. She had done nothing wrong except be his wife.
John Doe was completely in control of everything that happened. He understood human nature and the behavior that drives people, like a psychologist leading a group of lab rats in one of his experiments, or perhaps simply playing with them. It was truly baffling that he possessed such an extraordinary ability to manage his crimes with such uncanny ease.
Directing, Acting, and Cinematography
One of David Fincher's finest masterpieces, the film is marked by ever-present suspense, masterfully crafted connections among characters, powerful and vividly portrayed dramatic shifts, and the incredible emotions he evokes, particularly in the final scene and throughout the film as a whole, all of which are truly remarkable.
