Introduction to The Chase (2017) Korean movie
The Chase is a Korean movie with a high degree of drama, compelling you to examine the characters and their lives closely. It captivates you for a while, making you contemplate the loneliness each of them faces, setting it apart from the typical thriller and mystery genre.
Original title: Ban-deu-si jab-neun-da
The story centers on a solitary building owner, known for his materialism and harsh treatment of tenants. Each tenant struggles to pay rent and feels profoundly isolated, prompting him to berate them for late payments. Meanwhile, crimes in the neighborhood escalate to his building and its residents, drawing suspicion to him.
From this point, the suspense gradually intensifies, especially with the involvement of a former detective who has worked on similar cases for many years. The building owner becomes entangled with the detective as the detective tries to uncover the truth behind these events.
The movie contains attractive and exciting twists, not only in its events but also in the personal changes that affect this particular owner, including the abandonment of his materialism for the sake of his humanity that surfaces.
Attractive factors
Korean films truly know how to captivate you, from controversial characters to a series of perplexing and intense events, to moments of humor and lightheartedness, then escalating suspense as truths are revealed, followed by unexpected twists and turns that reignite the excitement.
But amidst all this, you never lose interest, eagerly anticipating the dramatic revelation. This is what makes this genre of films so special. Therefore, I didn't find any slackness or gaps in the plot that would make me turn off the movie and go to sleep.
Furthermore, the focus on diverse human aspects is one of the most distinctive features of Korean films. Although it's a story about a serial killer, the human element drives the film's twists and turns, conveying its powerful messages through the impact of its characters.
Mystery and exaggerated excitement don't need to be the driving force of the story; rather, psychological and moral transformations may be the crux of the matter and the source of the story's development and strength.
Faith and Concern
The film "The Chase" possesses a unique charm, stemming from the relationship between the building owner and the former inspector. Their connection continues to evolve, fueled by a shared goal, albeit one that is entirely different in nature.
The inspector is consumed by an overwhelming desire to uncover the truth about the serial killer he encountered in his youth—an encounter that remains etched in his memory.
Meanwhile, the building owner is preoccupied with finding the missing girl from his building, a girl whose survival remains uncertain.
Thus, their strengths and motivations converge in the search for the culprit. The inspector's intuition leads him to a strange suspicion about a particular individual who might be the killer, a suspicion that intensifies into an unwavering conviction.
Confusion
When you believe someone who has a strong intuition and conviction about something, you become blind to everything else. Your mind starts generating logical hypotheses, convincing you of this person's perspective. Then comes the moment when everything is completely overturned, when you receive a blow that shatters all that belief.
This is precisely what the film "The Chase" did, delivering a powerful blow to both the building owner and the viewers. It revealed that certainty had become a fading mirage, leaving everyone truly bewildered.
Then, it proposed another hypothesis, investigated by the building owner himself, which gradually proved correct, becoming the actual truth in only half of the crimes.
Responsibility
This psychological and human element drove the building owner to continue his search. Our personalities are defined only by the responsibilities we bear. Therefore, when there is a burden, there must be someone responsible. When the building owner was indifferent to the murders, he had no direct responsibility or burden to bear.
But now that the girl was missing and he was practically the only one who believed in the reason for her disappearance, the burden fell entirely on his shoulders. Thus, the true human being emerged behind the stern, materialistic facade, and his mind was empowered to search for the hidden half of the truth.
And so, he wasted no time or effort, reaching the girl just in time. The detective's belief in his vision of the culprit was also present at the right moment.
Ironically, the serial killer had been completely dormant for years, without committing any crimes, until the reason that drove him to commit the crime again appeared, so he woke from his slumber to commit it, but it was the reason for his exposure.
The film's splendor
One of the most distinctive aspects of the film "The Chase" is the transformation that occurs in the characters' souls and beliefs. This transformation is fraught with the challenge of putting humanity to the test, revealing its true inner character and shedding the outer shell that covers it.
The painful past that haunts us may be overcome only by confronting the difficult present that challenges us, a confrontation coupled with unwavering faith in our ability to transcend both.
The inherent fear of the unknown within us can only be eradicated by cultivating confidence, instilling human values within ourselves, and revealing our authentic selves. This diminishes fear and reveals the unknown.
People who live in solitude and isolation inevitably need companions, such as a lover or a friend, but we sometimes turn a blind eye to that, forget their existence, and forget that the circle of life is constantly turning and may suddenly bring us to the same situation, at which point we will know that we are in oblivion like them.
The acting is superb, the directing is outstanding, the cinematography is superb, the story is humane, and the suspense and twists are powerful.
