A one-of-a-kind story about freedom
The outstanding performance of the film's stars, particularly Jim Carrey and Ed Harris, as well as the rest of the actors who delivered their roles brilliantly and conveyed their emotions smoothly, with great skill and passion, combined with the camera angles and the enjoyable direction, made a significant impact in showcasing that.
The unique story told by the film is about Truman, a simple, peaceful man whose privacy has been invaded since his birth without him realizing it. As the story unfolds, he gradually discovers the false life he’s living and that he is the hero of the events around him. However, this does not stop him from trying to regain his lost freedom despite the many restrictions holding him back.
The steps taken in the film to cast doubt on Truman and reveal the truth in a way that gives the viewer an unnatural thrill and makes him sympathize with Truman in an unusual way, as freedom is the right of every human being on earth and the desire of all people.
The cohesion demonstrated by Truman's character is a unique model presented to us by Jim Carrey, even with his awareness of the complete falsehood of his reality, which could destroy any ordinary person. Despite his character being peaceful and very simple, he chose to fight for his freedom, representing the desired transformation for every person—to be able to overcome anything that imposes control over them or erases their humanity and freedom with brutality and tyranny.
Other characters.
The other characters in this movie were divided into two groups: one biased toward stealing Truman's real life and keeping him as the star of this unique show, and at the head of this group was the character of the show's director, Christoph, who was brilliantly performed by the star Ed Harris. The other group included Meryl, Truman's wife; Marlon, his close friend; Truman's mother; and the rest of the show's actors, as well as the show's viewers, who considered it their permanent and exclusive entertainment every day.
Another simple group wished for Truman to be freed from the false and miserable life he lives, led by Lauren, a character played by Natascha McElhone. She embodies warm and dreamy feelings and overwhelming love, touching all hearts in a captivating way and inspiring many viewers of the show to want to free Truman from the slavery of the show and its hateful golden cage.
All the characters came together in a wonderful way to present us with this amazing and exciting movie. Each character had qualities that set him apart from the others, making the movie feel unusually complete and inspiring love for everything about it—even with the sudden appearance of the character of the deceased father, who longed for a son (Truman) who didn't truly belong to him. This highlights how Truman's character affected everyone, causing them to unconsciously cling to the continuation of that show or not.
The overall performance of all the actors in this movie was enjoyable and brilliant, deserving praise for every moment.
Uncover the mystery
It was really scary and strange how Truman felt as his emotions grew that everything around him was working to keep him from leaving the city, and that he was being watched and followed in some way. His suspicions even shifted toward his wife and mother, thinking they were also involved in trying to stop him.
The only person he still trusted was his close friend Marlon, but he was no different from the others in trying to keep Truman confined to the show. As Truman's feelings grew stronger, the show's director began to interfere in an effort to crush those hopes. He used his friendship with Marlon to get him to give Truman a very special gift—his father, who had drowned before his eyes. This act restored something precious to Truman that he'd missed all these years, but he forgot that freedom is the most valuable thing to a person, and nothing can truly replace it.
Condemning anyone to be watched for their entire life and having their freedom and privacy taken away is disgusting and extremely selfish, even if it happens in a perfect world created for them where they are the biggest star. The show's creators didn’t see him as a person but as a lab rat in their experiment, viewing the entire world as part of their testing. When Truman understood their logic, he became a monster, fighting to reclaim his freedom.
Love and freedom
The wonderful thing about Truman's character is that he's an emotional person. When he first met Lauren, she caught his attention, and he saw a lot of words in her eyes. When they were alone together, he felt true love for the first time, and he became completely attached to her—so much so that he never forgot her, even after she disappeared and he married Meryl.
Lauren knew and felt the real Truman, not the star of the show. She saw him as a person, not a lab rat. Truman wasn't allowed to experience true love, as it could ruin everything in this show. So, her disappearance and pulling him away was the only way to keep the show going, despite the genuine feelings between them, which were doomed to be erased by the creators of this fake world.
From this point, Lauren became a major reason for Truman after all these years, as the falsehood of everything around him started to be revealed. As his feeling grew that the people closest to him were also caught in the same circle of deceit, Lauren became a flicker of genuine hope within him. This motivated him to desperately try to escape the city to find her and reach her. Additionally, another stronger motive intertwined with Lauren's: the desire for the freedom Truman had never experienced.
From Christoph's perspective, the director of The Truman Show, his vision was different. He saw himself as Truman's real father, wanting his son to always be within his sight and hearing. However, his primary motivation was not love but personal glory. For the rest of the actors in the show, their motivation was work and fame. Their hearts had darkened, and their eyes were blinded, unable to see the truth: Truman as a free man who deserves privacy. Love had not found its way to them.
Christof's reasoning for keeping Truman on the show was that he provided him with an ideal life and kept him away from the outside world with all its flaws. He believed that if Truman truly had the curiosity and ambition to see the outside world, he would eventually discover the truth, and he wouldn't stop him from leaving if that happened.
Weak logic is only necessary for the weak, because if you gave someone the choice between absolute freedom or living in an ideal world without restrictions, they would definitely choose freedom since it is the most valuable thing a person has.
escape via water
Truman decided to escape from his city, and his plan was so clever that it fooled all the cameras and observers. They didn't notice his method or location until it was too late. Truman had feared water ever since he saw his imaginary father drown in front of him.
So, choosing to escape through water was a smart move because no one would expect it. When Christoph found out, he tried to stop Truman by scaring him into drowning. He ran a storm program that nearly capsized his boat. When that didn’t work, he increased the program to maximum capacity, which was enough to drown Truman in front of millions of his followers. It was a public murder by the jailer Christoph, but Truman managed to hold on until the end.
Christoph realized that his prisoner Truman no longer feared anything because, on the path to freedom, no one would fear death. To Truman, freedom was as good as life itself. Truman had reached the exit door of the city, so Christoph had no choice but to finally reveal himself. During a live broadcast in front of the viewers, he spoke to Truman and tried every possible way to dissuade him from leaving, claiming that the world he'd created for him was the best and that the outside world was full of worse things.
Christoph also said he knew what Truman was thinking and that Truman was the star of the Truman Show. Truman's response was very sarcastic. In a theatrical gesture, he bowed in front of the cameras, smiled, and said his famous phrase that he greets his neighbors with every day. Then he walked out the door, slapping Christoph in the face in front of everyone, which sparked some viewers’ excitement about his freedom and others’ sadness and frustration.
Of course, Lauren was following what was happening on the screen, so she quickly moved down among the eager fans to meet the liberated Truman, while the rest of the viewers looked for other shows to watch.
Final word
A human life is not a commodity to be traded like in a movie, but a right that solely belongs to the individual, and no one has the authority to use him as such. Truman was completely exploited. He was born an orphan with no one to defend his rights, so his life was monopolized as a kind of imaginary adoption.
I wondered deep down, how was this allowed to happen so easily? It is a crime in my opinion that may surpass murder. How can you toy with a human being’s feelings and destiny with such impudence, and even claim the full right to imprison him in your laboratory? It is disgusting and an insult to the human race’s right to freedom.
The struggle that Truman endured for his freedom and love was fought by every possible means because there were special interests involved in his captivity. This reveals the dark side of humanity as a whole—when your freedom conflicts with my interests, that dark side immediately surfaces. It fights against the fixed, authentic right that is irreplaceable and cannot be bought with money: freedom.
The Truman Show is considered one of the greatest and most important films ever, thanks to its incredible performances, unique directing and cinematography, exceptional music and effects, and ultimately its original and profound concept.
