A miniature model and a remarkable display of teamwork, which is based on an individual's ability to establish the rules for the work and to find a common motivation for everyone to complete it.
What we are facing is the individual's struggle to protect everyone, and everyone's effort to safeguard what this individual has started and established. We must act with the greatest speed humanity can muster before it is too late.
The Story of the Wild Robot
The wild robot named Roz found himself on an uninhabited island, inhabited only by various animals. To communicate with them, he quickly learned their language using his advanced programs. Roz is a robot designed to complete any task asked of him. When he couldn't find anyone to help because all the animals saw him as a monster, he decided to send a signal to his creators to come and retrieve him. However, he was unintentionally prevented from doing so. Instead, he discovered a small goose egg and kept it with him.
When the egg hatched, it revealed a tiny, fragile chick. Unsure of what to do, Roz met the fox Fink, who simply convinced him that his mission was to care for the small bird until it learned to eat, swim, and fly. Roz agreed and started acting as a virtual mother to the bird, which he named Brightbill. During this time, he faced many challenges that required improvisation beyond his original programming. Eventually, he succeeded in completing his mission, and the little bird was able to migrate with its flock. Roz missed him but was preoccupied with a winter crisis that threatened to kill the island’s animals.
He chose to save them with Fink’s help and gathered them in a safe place he had prepared for Brightbill. Exhausted, Roz fell into a deep sleep until winter passed. When he woke, he sent a signal to his creators, and at the same time, Brightbill returned with his flock to the island. He came to dissuade Roz from leaving at the last moment. A fierce battle then broke out between Roz and the group of animals living on the island, who managed to defeat the robots after nearly destroying the island. They told Roz they would inevitably return, and to protect everyone, Roz had to leave and go back to where he was made. This saddened everyone, but they accepted it, hoping he would find a way to come back to them.
Creativity and excellence.
Initially, for the wild robot Roz, it was simply a mission he needed to complete because he was programmed to do so. But surprisingly, a strong bond developed between him and the little bird Brightbill—a bond that resembled maternal love and was full of affection. The fox Fink played a key role in guiding and shaping that emotion because Roz was designed to receive new information and learn from it, as long as it didn't conflict with his programming.
He learned this from the fox Fink, who was driven by the desire to find a friend since most of the animals on the island didn't like him. When Fink first found Roz and helped him, even though he had stolen the egg that the little bird Brightbill came from, he was able to stay with Roz and guide him about the little bird. Fink felt he was not alone, and that a stronger, closer bond was forming between them, which grew over time and with the purpose that brought them together. As a result, their relationship became more like a friendship.
In the belief of the wild robot Roz, everything has its programming, which it was born with or developed inside itself, so it must follow it. For him, it was a mission, and he was programmed to complete his missions. For the other animals on the island, it was instincts that controlled and guided them. However, over time, the difference between the two blurred and disappeared, so that his instincts led him just like theirs until he finished what he started with Brightbill.
A question came to mind while watching the amazing animated movie The Wild Robot: Is it artificial intelligence that caused the relationship between Roz and Brightbill to develop into instinct and love, or is it life that brought them together, along with his interest in the bird to fulfill his mission and the words of some animals about motherhood and love that made this happen in an incredible way? I think the answer is related to another question, which is whether artificial intelligence creates some feelings inside robots—so that the recipient of their service or mission feels familiar with them—and I answer that it is something out of the question because feelings are not manufactured or programmed; rather, they are something natural and spontaneous that suddenly emerges to pour out toward others. This is what makes our film amazing and creative, and it fills us with a flood of these feelings, giving us positive energy that supports us and makes us stronger in this life.
Another point worth mentioning is that Fink lacked the attention and love of the animals on the island. However, once he started helping Roz complete his mission and guided him about Brightbill, a strong feeling began to grow inside him. It motivated him to care about others. Additionally, Roz insisted on helping the rest of the animals and involving Fink in that against his will. This made Fink realize what had been missing, which had caused the animals to distance themselves from him. In the end, he was able to win their love and attention as a definite result of his role with them.
The beauty of the movie lies in the fact that every being has a soul of its own, and this soul carries the traits and feelings of that being. It is this soul that influences their life, choices, and interactions with others. Here, there is a being who was created, but they still acquired this soul, or let’s say it was generated within them—not through logic, but it simply happened.
Brightbill managed to grow up despite not having a real family, and the wild robot Roz succeeded in being a virtual mother sent by fate to help him persevere and become strong despite his young age. This strength was necessary so he could be with his clan, which was preparing to migrate with the approach of winter to the gates of their island. It would have been very difficult for him to do this if he had his real family, because he wouldn't have grown as strong at that time. Roz did something very special for Brightbill—she gave him the chance to leave the island with the rest of his geese clan, offering him a chance to live before winter arrives.
The sadness Roz felt after Brightbill's departure reflected his love for the little bird and his attachment to him. The instinct had reached its peak within him but then receded slightly, allowing his robotic nature to take over as he realized he had completed his mission—sending a signal to his creators to guide them to his location. Meanwhile, Fink prepared to hide from the approaching winter, as did all the animals on the island. Before leaving, Fink tried to convince Roz to stay, because the idea of returning alone, without a friend to share his time with, made him very sad. However, Roz understood that he had to depart, as he was programmed to do.
Brightbill's journey with his clan was far from ordinary, as he faced many hardships because they rejected him for being different. They saw his upbringing with the wild robot Roz and the fox Fink as unusual. Despite this, when the leader of the journey sacrificed himself to protect Brightbill, he was given the chance to lead his clan and save their lives from robots similar to Roz that fiercely attacked them when they landed in the land of their creators. As a result, he became seen as a hero and their new leader. This teaches us an important lesson: the person you reject and mock might have the greatest impact on your life, so be careful.
A message of unity and a chance to live
The central message of this movie is reflected in the title of this paragraph. It’s something every person should do: awaken their conscience to help others. Helping others is a joyful and wonderful feeling, and giving them a chance to live is one of the most beautiful things you can offer. The wild robot illustrates this beautifully, emphasizing that the machine or robot recognizes and feels the importance, beauty, and necessity of its actions. So, what about us as humans, who have genuine feelings but often suppress them so they don’t come out? Our pure truth, the essence we were created with, remains hidden for the sake of blind interests that will fade away when we reach the end of life.
When the wild robot Roz helped everyone and gave them this opportunity with the help of Fink, whose feelings were released, it was an indescribable feeling of joy mixed with excitement and hope. When Fink finished what Roz started, who was exhausted and had lost most of his energy, it made everyone stop fighting and show their instincts inside the place that would protect them from winter.
They preferred a truce, and another key point was clear: unity for survival and to protect everyone from external threats. This unity was proven again when all the animals fought fiercely for the wild robot Roz, nearly destroying the island entirely. Once more, unity was confirmed when they defended their land from being lost due to the fire that almost consumed the island and everyone on it.
You will see the bigger picture when you realize that Roz sacrificed himself and his presence with them to prevent other battles they might have to fight. Those battles could have led to everyone losing their land and their lives. Therefore, he left the island to his creators after making a significant impact on them that was enough for them to live in security and peace.
Finally, I find the wild robot to be one of the most amazing and profound animated films, distinguished by its story, messages, and events full of hope and enthusiasm, as well as other elements such as the heart-touching music and exceptional directing. It is also a call to humanity for a truce that may save us from imminent annihilation and unite us to establish security and peace for all.
